Man-of-War Washing Up in Fenwick Island

FENWICK ISLAND, Del. – Some unwelcome visitors have been washing up on Delaware’s shorelines.
Portuguese Man O’ War’s are a jellyfish-like species with a very painful sting, and Fenwick Island visitors claim they’ve seen them on the beach recently.
According to the Department of Natural Resources, a Man O’ War’s tentacles can grow up to 50 feet long, and stings from a Man O’ War “cause pain that lasts up to an hour and leaves whip-like red welts on the skin for several days afterward.”
If you see a Man O’ War on the beach or in the water, the best thing to do is keep your distance as the jellyfish can still sting you even when they’re dead.
These jellyfish are extremely rare to Delaware beaches, so you shouldn’t let it deter you from enjoying your beach getaway.
Missie and Emily Zeger, some Fenwick Island visitors said, “With anything else, I think you just have to be aware of your surroundings and have fun anyway.”
If you spot a Man O’ War on the beach, you are encouraged to tell the nearest lifeguard immediately.

American Flag Disposal Drop-Off
When an American flag becomes worn, faded, torn or soiled, it should be retired and replaced with a new flag. There are several ways to respectfully dispose of the American flag without showing disgrace. The most common method is burning the torn or tattered flag in a special ceremony.
As a service to the community, the Town will collect any American flags that need to be retired or replaced and make arrangements for proper disposal with the respect and gravity that it is entitled. Drop off boxes are located in both the Town Hall lobby and the Public Safety Building lobby.
As of 6/11/18, we have collected several flags and they have been taken to VFW Mason Dixon Post 7234 for disposal. Thank you to everyone that has dropped flags off!
