FENWICK ISLAND, Del. – Some unwelcome visitors have been washing up on Delaware’s shorelines.

Portuguese Man O’ War’s are a jellyfish-like species with a very painful sting, and Fenwick Island visitors claim they’ve seen them on the beach recently.

According to the Department of Natural Resources, a Man O’ War’s tentacles can grow up to 50 feet long, and stings from a Man O’ War “cause pain that lasts up to an hour and leaves whip-like red welts on the skin for several days afterward.”

If you see a Man O’ War on the beach or in the water, the best thing to do is keep your distance as the jellyfish can still sting you even when they’re dead.

These jellyfish are extremely rare to Delaware beaches, so you shouldn’t let it deter you from enjoying your beach getaway.

Missie and Emily Zeger, some Fenwick Island visitors said, “With anything else, I think you just have to be aware of your surroundings and have fun anyway.”

If you spot a Man O’ War on the beach, you are encouraged to tell the nearest lifeguard immediately.
