Fenwick Island State Park Improvements / Windfarm

    12/6/19:

The Town Council passed resolution 100-2019 at the 12/6/19 Council Meeting in regards to the windfarm project.

     12/2/19:

The Town of Ocean City has provided information to us in regards to the windfarm:

    11/25/19:

Members of Fenwick Island Town Council stated at the October 25, 2019 Council meeting that they were not in support of the plans for the Fenwick Island State Park as presented.

Some members expressed frustration that Fenwick Island was not given an opportunity to have input about the proposed plans.

On November 5, 2019, Mayor Langan requested the support of the Association of Coastal Towns (ACT) in seeking information and input to the proposed plans.  ACT voted to support our efforts.

Through discussions with Senator Hocker and Representative Gray, an informational workshop was held on November 19, 2019.

The Mayor has spoken to Secretary Garvin and Parks and Recreation Director Ray Bivens regarding the concerns of our citizens and property owners.  The Mayor was assured by Secretary Garvin that Fenwick Island would be given an opportunity for input into the park plans going forward.  Secretary Garvin also indicated that none of the park plans are firm and that they are very conceptual.

The Mayor, along with other Mayors of ACT, met with Secretary Garvin to discuss the proposed Fenwick Island State Park Plans and Ørsted transmission line landfall and met with Governor Carney to discuss the Coastal Community’s priorities which included the proposed Fenwick Island State Park and Ørsted transmission line landfall.

    Our website:

    • Advertised the public meeting on November 19, 2019
    • Indicates where to provide input regarding the State Park Plans
    • Provides a list of State and County officials to contact with feedback about the proposed park plans and Ørsted transmission line landfall.

We have requested ACT to sign a letter to Secretary Garvin with questions and concerns about the projects.

For more information in regards to the proposed changes, please visit destateparks.com/FenwickImprovements or call Matt Ritter at 302-739-9187.

The Town has sent DNREC, along with State and County representatives, a letter in opposition.  In reply to the letter, Senator Hocker and Representative Gray will be holding a meeting on November 19, 2019 at 6:00 PM.

    Message from Delmarva Power

At Delmarva Power, we are committed to providing safe, reliable, and affordable service for our customers and communities. With winter approaching, we encourage you and your community to be ready for the severe weather winter can sometimes bring.  Each day, we are performing essential work to prepare the local energy grid to keep homes and businesses warm and bright this winter. This work includes:

    • Inspecting existing infrastructure and upgrading equipment.
    • Installing smart technology that can automatically restore service more quickly or isolate damage.
    • Trimming trees that could potentially impact the system.

We invest hundreds of millions of dollars each year modernizing the local energy grid, which has resulted in the most reliable service in the company’s history in recent years. In fact, because of these important investments, our customers in Delaware and Maryland have experienced a 30-35 percent decrease in the frequency of service interruptions over the last five years.

Our preparation efforts also include conducting drills and coordinating closely with government and community partners to ensure we are ready to respond safely and quickly when our customers need us. We also participate in collaborative emergency response exercises with our Exelon sister companies – Atlantic City Electric, BGE, ComEd, PECO and Pepco – to ensure we can provide seamless support during a storm. During the winter storms, and hurricane season that impacted the southeastern seaboard, this coordination allowed mutual assistance crews to quickly respond and support power restoration efforts in the hardest hit parts of the East Coast.

Being prepared is a responsibility everyone should take seriously. Help us spread the word about emergency preparedness by encouraging your community to assemble an emergency storm kit and prepare a plan for what to do during a power outage or winter storm. Encourage residents to visit delmarva.com/mobileapp to download our mobile app, which has many resources to keep customers informed during a storm. More tips, resources and safety information are available at delmarva.com/storm.

If a severe storm hits, monitor local weather reports regularly and follow the advice of local emergency management officials. Know that we follow a strategic response to restore service to the greatest number of customers first and will work to restore your service as quickly and safely as possible. Customers are asked to immediately report a downed wire or service issue by calling 800-898-8042, visiting delmarva.com, or through our mobile app. If you smell natural gas, leave the area immediately and then call Delmarva Power at 302-454-0317.

Due to heavy rains expected today and the potential ponding on the roads on Thursday, APS has postponed tomorrow’s road work and will be back on Friday, October 18th (weather permitting) to work on the streets.

Asphalt Paving Systems (APS) will be repairing the damaged microsurfaced areas on Tuesday, October 15th from 8:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m., weather permitting.  Areas to be repaired are:

    • Bayard Street (including West Bayard and Bayard Street Ext.)
    • Bayside Drive
    • Madison Avenue
    • Oyster Bay Drive
    • Bunting Avenue (from Cannon Street through to James Street)

If the road is blocked off, please DO NOT walk on it and DO NOT ride your bike or vehicle on it.  Barricades will be removed once the surface is completely dry.

You may also want to move your vehicle to an adjacent street during this time as well.

    Weed/Brush Upkeep

    Dear Property Owner(s):
During routine inspections of Town properties, it has come to the Town’s attention that some properties on the east side of Route 1 have been permitted to allow the growth of weeds and brush without any kind of upkeep. The belief has been that as long as a cultivated lawn is not present, the growth of such weeds and brush are considered natural growth to the habitat and, therefore, allowed to grow without any type of maintenance.

This practice has resulted in many properties that are deemed to be unsightly and unsanitary or in any other manner detrimental to the welfare of the Town or adjoining lot owners.

Town code Chapter 120-1 states the “each owner shall be required to cut the weeds and grass on his lot(s) and remove rubbish which accumulate thereon. The predominant height of grass and/or weeds shall not exceed 10 inches. All areas shall be maintained so that no grass and/or weeds are allowed to grow in any area that is not an established lawn”.

The Town will begin enforcing this ordinance effective April 1, 2020. This does not include ornamental grasses but does prohibit allowing any weeds, commercial grass and/or phragmites to continue to grow with no maintenance. As stated above, any such weeds, commercial grass and/or phragmites will be considered in violation of the Town code if allowed to grow taller than 10 inches.

It is the intent of the Town to give property owners enough time to comply with this new enforcement of Town code. If you have any questions regarding this matter, feel free to contact me at 302-539-3011 or pschuchman@fenwickisland.org.

Thank you in advance for your anticipated cooperation.
